How the FPS Test Works

This tool uses your browser's requestAnimationFrame API to count how many frames your system renders per second. Unlike software FPS counters that hook into game processes, this test measures your browser's actual rendering performance. It runs for 10 seconds and tracks every frame to give you current FPS, average FPS, minimum FPS, maximum FPS, frame time in milliseconds, and a stability percentage. Because browsers synchronize rendering to your screen, your result is capped at your display's refresh rate: a healthy 60Hz system tops out at 60 FPS, a 144Hz system at 144 FPS. The test is designed to reveal stutter, drops, and instability, not to push your GPU to its limit.

What Is 1% Low FPS (and Why It Matters More Than Average)

Average FPS hides your worst moments. You can average 120 FPS and still feel constant stutter if the frame rate keeps dropping. That is what the 1% low measures: the average frame rate of your slowest 1% of frames. These are the dips, hitches, and micro-stutters your eyes actually notice in fast games. Alongside it we show your single worst frame. Dedicated benchmark suites also report a 0.1% low, but that statistic needs far more frames than a 10 second browser test collects, so we report the worst frame under its honest name instead of an inflated percentile.

How to read it

The closer your 1% low is to your average FPS, the smoother your experience. If your average is 120 but your 1% low is 45, you have a frame pacing problem that no amount of raw FPS will fix. Pro and competitive players watch 1% low more closely than average because it predicts how a game feels in a firefight. Our benchmark also reports jitter, the frame-to-frame timing variation in milliseconds, so you can spot inconsistent frame pacing at a glance.

FPS Test vs In-Game FPS

Your browser FPS test result and your in-game FPS are different measurements. Games use your GPU directly through DirectX or Vulkan APIs which are much more efficient than a browser's rendering pipeline. A browser FPS test showing 120 FPS does not mean your games run at 120 FPS. However if your browser struggles to hit 60 FPS on this simple canvas test, your system likely has performance issues that affect gaming too.

What is a good FPS test score?

60 FPS or above is good for general use. For competitive gaming aim for 144 FPS or higher. A good performance score is 80 or above out of 100, which means your average FPS is high and your 1% low stays close to it. If your score is below 30 FPS close background apps and retest.

What is 1% low FPS in this benchmark?

The 1% low is the average frame rate of your slowest 1% of frames. It measures the dips and micro-stutters you actually feel. We also report your single worst frame; a 10 second test does not collect enough frames for a statistically valid 0.1% low, so we label that number honestly as the worst frame instead. If your 1% low is far below your average FPS, you have a frame pacing problem.

How does this FPS benchmark work?

Keep the tab visible for the whole run; the test cancels itself if the tab is hidden because browsers pause rendering in background tabs.

Why is my FPS test score low?

Common causes are too many open browser tabs, background apps using CPU or GPU, outdated graphics drivers, or a laptop in power-saving mode. Close other apps and retest.

What is a good frame time result?

Frame time is how long each frame takes to render in milliseconds. At 60 FPS the average frame time is 16.7ms and at 144 FPS it is 6.9ms. Lower average frame time means a higher frame rate; for smoothness, what matters most is that frame times stay consistent, which is what our jitter and stability metrics track.

Is this the same as testing FPS in games?

No. This tests browser rendering performance using requestAnimationFrame. In-game FPS uses your GPU through DirectX or Vulkan. The results will differ but browser FPS reflects your system's general rendering capability.
