A good FPS for gaming is 60 frames per second for smooth single-player play, and 144 FPS or higher for competitive shooters. Below 30 FPS most games feel choppy and unresponsive. Between 30 and 60 FPS games are playable but you will notice lag in fast motion. At 60 FPS gameplay feels smooth for the vast majority of titles. Once you cross into 120, 144, and 240 FPS the gains are about responsiveness and competitive edge rather than basic playability. The right number depends on what you play and what your monitor can actually display.

What Each Frame Rate Actually Feels Like

Numbers only mean so much. Here is how each common frame rate feels in practice and who it suits.

30 FPS

Playable but clearly choppy in fast motion. Each frame stays on screen for 33 milliseconds, long enough for your eyes to notice the gaps. Fine for slow games and older consoles, frustrating for shooters.

60 FPS

The smoothness baseline most players should target. Frame time drops to 16.7 milliseconds and motion feels fluid. This is the sweet spot for single-player games and the minimum serious players accept.

120 and 144 FPS

A clear step up in responsiveness. Aiming feels more connected and fast flicks are easier to track. This is the range most competitive players chase, and it pairs with a 120Hz or 144Hz monitor.

240 FPS and Above

The domain of pro and esports players. The jump from 144 to 240 is subtle but real in motion clarity and input lag. You need a 240Hz display and a strong GPU and CPU to actually use it.

Your Monitor Sets the Ceiling

A good FPS is only useful if your monitor can display it. Frame rate is how many frames your GPU produces, and refresh rate (Hz) is how many your monitor can show each second. A 60Hz monitor displays at most 60 of them, so 200 FPS on a 60Hz screen mostly goes to waste. Match your FPS target to your refresh rate: aim for around 60 FPS on a 60Hz panel, 144 FPS on a 144Hz panel, and so on. Average FPS Is Not the Whole Story

Two systems can both average 100 FPS and feel completely different. What separates them is the 1% low and 0.1% low, which are the average of your slowest 1% and 0.1% of frames. These dips are the stutters and hitches you feel in a firefight. A good FPS result has a 1% low that stays close to the average. If your average is 120 but your 1% low is 40, you have a frame pacing problem that raw FPS will not fix. When you measure your own frame rate, watch the 1% low as closely as the average.
